The New York Times: Crossplatform Content
Each week, The New York Times publishes more words than Shakespeare wrote in his lifetime. I strategize how to curate and condense these stories into shareable graphics and videos that publish across multiple social platforms, with a reach of over 90 million followers. Social visuals help The Times’ journalism find new audiences and allow for crucial information to reach more people.
The New York Times: Instagram
As part of the Instagram team, I pushed the feed to be more newsy and introduced type cards and video content to the account. I created countless vertical stories, using animation and moving type to bring stories to life that were otherwise static.
The New York Times: Type System for Social Media
Previously, styles across platforms were inconsistent and lacked an overall design logic. I collaborated with the Brand and Identity team to streamline all visuals for social media and created a styleguide. The design system is adaptable for future platform needs, as social is constantly shifting format requirements. The template library that I maintain and continue to expand is used to make hundreds of posts per week. Consistent design can increase overall engagement on social.
The New York Times: Meet Our Correspondents
I trained journalists in mobile-first storytelling techniques and produced on-the-ground stories from around the globe. I also tracked down reporters and filmed their takes on important or complex news moments to share on Instagram — jumping into a closet-sized room with Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey to capture their reactions to the Weinstein verdict and trailing Marc Lacey when he picked out which tie he would wear to moderate a presidential debate.
Showing the faces and personalities of reporters can help build audience trust.
The New York Times: Original Reporting
Protesters were calling out the unfair seizure of Black-owned oceanfront property by the KKK in Manhattan Beach. I reported on the history of the area and the current activism for The New York Times social channels and California Today. There was an immediate reaction by the community and other news outlets covered the story. Ultimately, Governor Newsom signed legislation to return the land to its Black descendants.
The New York Times: Creative Strategy
Performance data influences the creative strategy that I develop and share across Audience and Visual teams each month. I present an internal report that analyzes our top hits, surveys the competitive landscape, introduces ideas for new formats, and forecasts the future of social media. I developed the creative strategy for NYT to expand to more platforms later this year and led the team that piloted our TikTok account.
